Business Owners Need to Raise the Bar on Their Websites

Website matter, that’s the bottom line. They are a great sales tool, they help build your brand and in many cases, are the face of your company. More often than not your website is the first experience a potential customer will have with your company. That experience can either be great or not. It’s up to you to choose.

Website Design is Constantly Changing

The thing about website design is just like the internet as a whole it’s a rapidly changing field. Most marketing firms recommend redesigning your website every two to three years. That’s because the technology keep changing and improving. Think about this for a moment. Does your website work well on a tablet or smart phone? It better because mobile browsing of the web is about to take over the top spot from traditions pc’s and laptops. If your website lacks a mobile version or is not a responsive design (meaning it changes to fit the screen size it’s being viewed on) then you’re going to be left behind. People that visit your website searching for something they need but have a hard time just viewing your website leave! Website visitors are potential customers, do you want them walking away? Earlier this year Matt Cutts, Google’s face for search, reiterated that businesses need to have websites that are friendly on mobile devices.  He even said responsive design is preferred especially if you want to rank well in organic search results.

A Great Website is Infused with Your Brand

We preach, as do many others that to build a business you want a strong brand. I won’t go into what makes a strong brand as that’s not what this article is about. But a key piece of every brand building campaign is infusing your website with it. Your logo, colors, tagline, philosophy and so on. Your website is a chance to tell your story, not just push products or services. Done right your website can show off the true personality of your business. Is your company a fun or serious place? Maybe it’s a bit of both? A great website should be an extension of your company.

Your Website Needs to Be Interesting

This should be self explanatory, but I’ll explain the point anyway. Even the most boring business in the most boring industry can have an interesting website. Your website design is a starting point to making it interesting. Good looking graphics, slideshows, and video can make your website more engaging. Engaging websites naturally encourage visitors to stay longer. The longer they stay the more likely they are to contact you about a product or service you may be offering. In which case interesting websites can help you sell more, and that is the goal of most websites.

Your Website Should Make You Look Unique

Being that I own a company that designs websites for businesses I’ll admit to being biased when I say I hate website templates. I see companies like Web.com advertising how easy it is to get your website up and running and I cringe. They and so many others like them offer templates that can be used to get your website up and running in no time. One of the downsides of a template though is that it’s boring. Sure you can usually slap your logo and colors on it somewhere but realistically it lacks the original look that comes with a well done custom website. I won’t go into the additional drawbacks of a template except to say that because it’s a template, if you used it so have other people. Having a custom website gives you the opportunity to craft an experience unique to you.

A Custom Website is More Affordable Than You Might Realize

Having a great website means making a financial investment in your business. There was a time, back in the day that having a custom website designed meant spending five or ten thousand dollars. Those days are gone. Some companies charge more and some less. Remember though you get what you pay for and most companies use different formulas for determining the cost. We start with a base rate and then charge for additional pages beyond the initial 5. We also charge for certain functions that may be requested. Knowing that not everyone needs the same things we build your website quote from the ground up. Knowing what more pages or an additional function may cost helps business owners make educated decisions about what their website should have while staying within their budget.

Unlike most things that a business owner may purchase a website actually can help you make money! It’s a 24/7 sales tool that never needs a break. Consider how much money a salesperson would cost you in salary each month? Having a custom website built is a one time cost. Even if you update it every two to three years it’s still a good investment and the monthly cost to host it is minimal. If your website is looking a bit tired and dated it might be time to do something about it. And if you don’t have a company website then what are you waiting for?
